What Is Relfydess (RelabotulinumtoxinA)?
Mechanism of Action / Drug Profile
Relfydess is relabotulinumtoxinA, a form of botulinum toxin type A, developed by Galderma.
It’s manufactured using PEARL™ Technology, which preserves the molecule in a ready-to-use, liquid form.
Because it’s “ready-to-use,” there’s no need for reconstitution, which reduces preparation variability and helps deliver consistent dosing.
Clinical / Aesthetic Performance
Phase IIIb clinical data (RELAX trial) show a rapid onset of action — some patients see effects from Day 1.
The effect is long-lasting: many patients maintained improvements for up to 6 months in trials.
Because of its stability and precise dosing, Relfydess may help reduce dosing errors and improve safety / predictability in aesthetic use.
2. Key Medical Benefits of Relfydess for “Full Face” Use
When used for a “full face” approach (e.g., forehead, glabella, crow’s-feet), Relfydess can provide:
Muscle relaxation: Reduces dynamic wrinkles by partially relaxing facial muscles.
Extended duration: Since its effect lasts up to ~6 months, patients may require fewer treatment cycles vs. some older toxins.
Consistency of dosing: Liquid ready-to-use format helps ensure consistent volume and potency each injection.
Patient satisfaction: Clinical trials report high patient satisfaction over extended periods.
Risks / Side-Effects (Standard for Botulinum Toxin):
Possibility of local injection-related issues (bruising, swelling, injection-site pain)
Muscle over-weakening (if overdosed), potentially leading to asymmetry or unwanted muscle effects
Rare systemic effects if misused
3. New UK Legislation & Regulatory Landscape for Botulinum Toxin (“Toxins”)
Recently, the UK government and regulators have introduced tighter regulations on cosmetic injectables, especially botulinum toxins. Key points:
Prescriber / Practitioner Requirements
Only suitably qualified healthcare professionals will be allowed to perform higher-risk aesthetic procedures.
As of June 2025, in-person consultations are required for prescribing botulinum toxin; remote prescribing or “just-ordering online” is restricted.
Under-18s Ban
Under the Botulinum Toxin and Cosmetic Fillers (Children) Act, it is illegal to perform botulinum toxin or filler injections for cosmetic purposes on anyone under 18 in England.
It’s also an offence to arrange or book such treatments for under-18s.
Crackdown on Unlicensed & Illegal Products
The MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) is investigating and prosecuting illegal supply of non-UK-authorised botulinum toxin.
There is a serious public health risk: in 2025, there were 41 confirmed cases of iatrogenic botulism linked to the aesthetic use of unlicensed toxins.
Penalties: Supplying unlicensed botulinum toxin can lead to unlimited fines and up to 2 years in prison under the Human Medicines Regulations.
Public advice: Verify that the botulinum toxin product is licensed in the UK and that your practitioner is medically qualified.
4. Why These Changes Matter Clinically / for Patients
Safety: The crackdown encourages the use of licensed, quality-assured toxin products, reducing the risk of contamination or poor handling.
Patient Protection: Licensing clinics can help weed out “cosmetic cowboys” offering treatments in unsafe environments.
Quality of Care: Ensuring only qualified prescribers and well-trained practitioners means more consistent and safer treatment.
Legal Accountability: Clear laws and regulation provide stronger consumer protection; patients can more easily check credentials and product legitimacy.
